Brightness is the one spec that matters most - but read it correctly when choosing the right projector for Halloween projection effects
For projection effects, brightness beats everything. But before you compare numbers, know this: most projector brightness figures are inflated. Cheap projectors advertise huge "LED lumens" or plain "lumens" because the honest standard - ANSI lumens - is harder to pass. A projector shouting "9,000 lumens" is often around 200 ANSI in reality. So only trust a number that says ANSI (or ISO 21118); treat anything else as marketing.
Projection is also a night-time medium — it washes out in daylight no matter how bright the projector. Everything below assumes an evening or after-dark display.
How many ANSI lumens you actually need

Three things that matter as much as the number
Darkness is cheaper than lumens. The strongest, cheapest upgrade is a darker setting — project at night, choose a window away from direct light, and shield streetlight spill (the black-card mask from the Window guide does this job too).
Brightness spreads over area. Double the width of your image and the light covers roughly four times the area, so it looks far dimmer. A small window is very forgiving; a whole garage door is not.
Effects are forgiving. A bright figure on a black background, seen in the dark, reads well even at modest brightness — so you generally need less than home-cinema guides suggest. Don't over-buy for a single dark window. [IMG: same effect, dark vs ambient light]

Resolution: watch for the "1080p" trap
Our effects are 1080p, so a native 1080p projector shows them crisply — but here's the catch that catches everyone: many cheap projectors advertise "1080p" when they only mean they'll accept a 1080p signal. The actual display panel might be 480p or lower, so your sharp effect ends up soft and blocky on the wall. Look for the words native resolution (or native 1080p) — not "1080p supported" or "1080p compatible," which describe the input, not the picture.
You don't need 4K for projection effects — it adds cost without adding much to a ghost on scrim, and people view from a distance. Native 1080p is the sweet spot; a genuine 720p can do on a tight budget. Content is 16:9, so a 16:9 projector fills the frame naturally.
Keystone and angle: projecting up into a window often means an angled position, which throws a wonky trapezoid image. Digital keystone correction squares it back up, but it crops and softens slightly — so get the projector as square-on to the surface as you reasonably can first, and let keystone handle only the last little bit.

A USB slot saves you the most hassle
A projector that plays video straight from a USB stick means no laptop, no cables, no fuss — plug in and play. If you buy one feature, buy this one.

Throw distance: how far back to place it
Throw distance is how far the projector sits from the surface to make a given image size, and it's set by the projector's throw ratio. The formula is simple:
Throw distance = throw ratio × image width.
So a projector with a throw ratio of 1.5 needs 1.5 ft of distance for every 1 ft of image width — a 4 ft-wide window would want it roughly 6 ft back. Throw ratios fall into three groups:
Standard (~1.2–2.0): the most common and cheapest. Needs a fair bit of room — fine if you can set it back across a room.
Short throw (~0.4–1.0): fills a large image from close up — ideal for tight spaces or projecting from right beside the glass.
Ultra-short throw (~0.25): a big image from inches away, but pricey and rarely needed here.
Practical version: for a normal window with a few feet of space in front, a standard projector is fine. Tight for room? A short-throw model saves you. Most projectors also have a little zoom to fine-tune the size without moving the whole unit — and a free online throw calculator will give you the exact distance for your model and window.

Even with a USB slot, an HDMI input is worth having so you can add a media player, TV stick or laptop later — essential for interactive/triggered setups.
Running it outdoors — keep it dry and cool
Projectors are indoor electronics, and an unprotected one left outside can fail fast. For a driveway display you don't need a professional enclosure — a simple weatherproof box does the job — but mind three things:
Ventilation. Projectors run hot and rely on their own fans. Cut vent holes so heat can escape and the fans can breathe, but position them so they can't draw rain straight in.
Condensation. The real enemy on a cold night. A sealed box around a warm projector can sweat, and moisture kills electronics — so a little airflow actually helps, and the projector's own heat keeps condensation at bay while it's running.
Cold. Very low temperatures cause condensation and sluggish performance. In a cold climate, bring the projector indoors when it's not running rather than leaving it out all season.
A classic cheap fix is an upside-down plastic tote with a hole cut for the lens and vents for airflow — plenty for a night's display. For whole-house or permanent setups, where the projector must sit in exactly the same spot every night, a dedicated enclosure and mount earns its keep. Whatever you use, test the full setup in its real spot before Halloween — not at 6pm on the night.
